Mogadishu - The Human Rights Watch Wednesday accused the Kenyan police in Nairobi of abusing the ethnic Somali and Ethiopian refugees in Nairobi, the organization released a report.
A 68-page report released at a press conference in Nairobi was based on interviews with 101 refugees, asylum seekers, and Kenyans of Somali ethnicity according to Human Rights Watch's Gerry Simpson.
The report accused the Kenyan police of committing Torture, Rape, Extortion, and Arbitrary Detention and other abuses in the Somali neighborhood in Kenya’s Capital Nairobi.
According to the report, HRW documented how police used grenade and other attacks by unknown people in Nairobi’s mainly Somali suburb of Eastleigh and a government order to relocate urban refugees to refugee camps as an excuse to rape, beat, extort money from, and arbitrarily detain, at least 1,000 people.
Such attacks forced many Somali refugees who faces arbitrary arrest in Nairobi to return to Mogadishu without their own plan.
Naima Omar 23, who was arrested by Kenyan police on Novenber 23, 2012 in Nairobi claimed that she was in jail for 4 days and was released with ransom money.
"I was arrested with so many people, my family paid some money to take me outside of the prison, and finally I decided to return to Mogadishu" Omar Said.
"Fear is fear, I ran rom Mogadishu because of Alshabab and if I fear from the Kenya police why do I stay in Nairobi" She added
Omar explained that she feared Alshabab for her life, but the Kenyan police for rape.
"If Alshabab kills you that is the end of the life, but if Kenyan soldiers rape you it will be a pain to live with the rest of your life, so, of two evils you choose the less"
The report is coming a time the Somali refugees in Kenya are facing uncertainity of their future, because the new leaders of Kenya want the refugees to go back home, Somalia.
