    Somalia: Japan resumes relations to Somalia

    Mogadishu, QN - The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the Prime Minister of Japan, H.E. Shinzo Abe co-chaired the Special Conference on Somalia here in Yokohama, Japan.

Mogadishu, QN - The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the Prime Minister of Japan, H.E. Shinzo Abe co-chaired the Special Conference on Somalia here in Yokohama, Japan.

Participants of the Special Conference on Somalia included Presidents of Djibouti, Tanzania, South Sudan, Algeria, Vice President of Kenya, Prime Ministers of Ethiopia and Egypt, Under Secretary of the SG of the UN, Ministers from Brundi, Libya, Siera-leone, Uganda, and other dignitaries from USA, UK, Australia, Italy, South Africa, IGAD, WFP among others.

The Prime Minister of Japan opened the conference and said “ Japan wishes to express its respect for the leadership demonstrated by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. We will vigorously support the determination shown towards the future of the Somali people.”


The Prime Minister of Japan also stated that “Moreover, in order to contribute to Somalia’s nation-building in a fully-fledged manner, Japan has decided to resume direct bi-lateral assistance to Somalia.”
The President of Somalia H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud thanked the leadership of the Prime Minister of Japan and said “I would like to thank the people and the Government of Japan for its leadership to host this special meeting on Somalia and Japan’s unwavering support to the people of Somalia. This timely special meeting on Somalia here in Yokohama shows Japan’s commitment to Somalia and we value very much.”

The President concluded his remarks “Finally, this Conference is expected to complement the Second London Conference on Somalia on 7thMay, which agreed on measures to support our plans in the areas of security, justice and public financial management. And we hope that the outcomes of these two Conferences will be reflected in the discussion of the conference in Brussels in September.”
