Baidoa, QN — Alshabab fighters launched anti aircraft machine gun at a UN chartered chopper trying to land in Baidoa airport Wednesday morning in a bid to violate the services of the airport, witnesses confirmed.
The attack happened in Daudey village 18kms in the out skirts of Baidoa, a village laying the distance where the planes landing at Baidoa airport start descending.

Nur Ow-Hassanow, a resident in Baidoa told Qalin News Online through phone that a Khat plane was attacked before the UN chopper but both planes safely landed at the airport.

“Alshabab militants attacked two planes, the first one was a khat plane, the second one was a chopper with UN printed on it” said Ow-Hassanow.

“They launched Zu-23 artillery at chopper carrying UN and AMISOM staff, they wanted to destroy the chopper in order to restrict the UN movement in the region” he added.

Joint forces, the Somalia National Army and African Union peacekeeping forces AMISOM responded to the militants’ attack and stormed to Daudey village to secure the smooth landing of the planes in the Baidoa airport.

There was no casualty on both planes, but the following fighting killed dozens of animals in the village as SNA and AMISOM launched a counter attack on the attacking Alshabab fighters.

Alshabab fighters, an Alqaeda affiliate in Somalia, which is dealing with deadly internal conflict, tries to engage its fighters to its external enemies, the government and its allies, as one of the top leaders Hassan Dahir Aweys surrendered to the government and remains in the custody of the national security agency.
